UGANDA

Liberia vs. Uganda 2:0
Monrovia (Liberia), 24.03.2013

Regarding East African state of Uganda, many of you might not have too much association about. Uganda offers a remarkably species-rich flora and fauna, for example 1061 different birds or the famous mountain gorillas. Even Churchill mentioned Uganda as “the pearl of Africa”. The country is renowned to be well developed in touristy and very hospitable as well. But that wasn’t always the case: since its independence from the United Kingdom in 1962, the country was under the dictatorships of Milton Obode and later Idi Amin. Since Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is reigning there are still human rights abuses, but generally the country calmed down underwent an economic recovery. Although there a many recommendation – for example Lonely Planet Magazine voted Uganda as “Best Tourist Location of 2012” for example – it is still advised not to visit the country’s instable north close to the border of South Sudan. In Uganda, there are 43 languages spoken, it is also the youngest country on earth with almost 50% of people under the age of 14. Ugandans consume above-average amounts of bananas and alcohol, which is why they even have a special banana wine.

Football is the most popular sport in Uganda. The “Cranes”, who recently failed at the WC qualifiers tightly behind Angola, celebrated their biggest victory in 1978 with a second place in the African Cup of Nations in Ghana (with a 0-2 defeat against the hosts in the final). At least, the Ugandans won the East and Middle Africa Championship 13 times.

When I think of Uganda and its football shirts, definitely their legendary Hummel shirt of 2002 with those flying cranes on it comes to my mind – what a masterpiece! Ugandan shirts appear on eBay from time to time, but there are a few adidas fakes on tour, which is why I cannot say definitely whether my shirt (possibly an alternative or goalkeeper shirt, as the Ugandas use to play in yellow or red) is legit. Nevertheless, I really like their badge, although countries who write their name largely on their chest appear a little suspect to me…
(By the way: how awesome is Uganda's flag?)
