GHANA

(Ghana Football Association)

There are not too many national teams in the world that went through such a rapid rise as the West African Ghana. The “Black Stars”, how they are called according to the little black star right in the middle of their flag, have been one of the most succesfull teams in Africa winning the African Cup of Nations four times, as they first qualified for a FIFA World Cup in 2006. There Ghana was the only African team that made it through the group stage. 2010 they also were the last African team in the tournament. It seemed as if whole Africa stood behind the pride of a whole continent, as they got beaten by Uruguay in an unthinkable dramatically way – thanks to “Mr. Fairplay” Luis Suarez. Pfff.

The youth teams of Ghana also have awesome nick names and great successes as well. The Under17 (“Black Starlets”) won the World Cup in 1991 and 1995, 2009 the Under20 (“Black Satellites”) also could win it and in 1992, the U23 (“Black Meteors”) made it to a very respectable third place in the Olympic Games. That is why the FIFA awarded Ghana in 2005 as “Most improved team of the year”.

There are big players such as Michael Essien, Kevin-Prince Boateng or André Ayew who made it to big clubs in world football, and in the past some Ghanaians like Antony Yeboah (Eintracht Frankfurt) or Hans Sarpei (FC Schalke 04) became cult figures even in Germany, too. I always liked the Ghanaian team although there are many people thinking that Ghana is playing the most “European” football of all African national teams.

I directly fell in love with this Ghana jersey which I bought on eBay for a very legit price and without shipping costs. I hesitated not for a second! I really love the color gradient from a dark red into a powerful sun yellow. Under the cool badge of the FA, you can find four stars for each victory in the African Cup of Nations. Usually the Ghanaians play totally in white. They used that red and yellow shirt between 2012 and 2013. The only problem: it is ridiculously difficult for me to squeeze my huge head through the tiny collar… :)
