NETHERLANDS

(Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbal Bond )

Every year lots of young Germans like to travel to our neighbors in the Netherlands (wrongly also called “Holland” often). They don’t travel there to see tons of tulips or windmills, the art treasure in the numerous prominent museums, the pictorial town canal city of Amsterdam or the excellent cheese made by Antje in her wooden clogs. Basically, the Netherlands are famous for smoking weed legally. The Dutchmen are also very passionate bicyclists and own Europe’s most caravans per head as well. I especially love the Dutch language.

The Dutch are a powerhouse in ice skating, field hockey and darts, but also they have one of the strongest football teams of Europe and are one of the biggest rivals of the German team. The “Elftal” is also probably the most unlucky nation in football history loosing three WC finals – 1974 and 1978 even one after another. At least they could win the European Championship in 1988 with their legendary team around world football player “King” Johan Cruyff. In WC 2014, they also showed off some excellent football at the beginning, especially when they blasted the defending champion from Spain with a 5-1 victory in their first match, but I do really have to say that diving champion Arjen Robben is despite his awesome skills the far most unsympathetic footballer in our galaxy in my opinion.

The Dutch team, that traditionally wears “oranje” shirts, announced themselves confidently in their shirts’ collar to the “Nieuwe Meesters” (the “new masters”), but unfortunately went out of the tournament right after the group stage, among other things with another defeat against Germany. I really like the cool color of the shirts, but I have to say that I would expect a badge of more qualitative material for such an important FA…
