HONDURAS

(Federación Nacional Autónoma de Fútbol de Honduras)

Jerry Bengtson (New England Revolution)
France vs. Honduras 3:0
Porto Alegre (Brazil), 15.06.2014

Tropical Honduras, which is known not meant disrespectfully as „Banana Republic“, got its name from the Spanish world „hondura“ (depth). Geographically, Honduras has a very deep, cleft surface because of a continental drift and is known to be the connector between Central and South America. A very special nature phenomenon is the so-called “fish rain” (lluvia de peces) in Honduras, where it is literally raining fish. Unfortunately, almost half of the Hondurans are living under the poverty line. As I tried to drink a beer of every participant of WC 2014, I failed because it wasn’t possible to find any beer from Honduras in Frankfurt.

Regarding football, Honduras mostly caused rumors in 1969, where it even came to a war lasting 100 days between the two countries, after Honduras had faced its neighbor and rival from El Salvador during qualifiers. Besides basketball and boxing, football is the absolute national sport in Honduras. The “Catrachos” already made it to three WC participations and won the North and Central America Championship in 1981, too. During all three World Cups, Honduras attracted attention mostly not for some good football but for a lot of fouls and finished the group stages all three times in last place. In their match against France in 2014, Honduras became the first team ever to receive an opponent’s goal after the decision of the goal line technology. After the career end of public idol Wilson Palacios, now the most valuable Honduran footballer, Emilio Izaguirre, plays in Scotland for Celtic FC.

At first sight, I thought that the actual Honduran jersey was very boring. But than I got it very cheaply on eBay and somehow directly fell in love with it. The white Joma shirt is processed very well and offers a lot of beautiful little details. Especially very cool: the huge “H” that they use as the FA’s badge, which is processed very awesome and makes the shirt look a lot like a baseball shirt.
