POLAND

(Polski Związek Piłki Nożnej)

Artur Jedrzejczyk (Kuban Krasnodar)
England vs. Poland 2:0
London (England), 15.10.2013

In spite of their turbulent history, the national team of Poland has done it very well in many international tournaments. After their Olympic Gold Medal in 1972, they achieved two third places at the FIFA World Cup (1974 and 1982). Paradoxically the Polish eleven could not qualify for an EURO for a long time. Although they seemed to have a „golden generation” around legendary Grzegorz Lato, they had to wait for that tournament until 2008. In 2012, they hosted the tournament together with the Ukraine.

I experienced the Polish football being very straight-lined and passionately. During the World Cup in 2006, I watched the group match between Germany and Poland at some Polish friends of mine in their party cellar. Of course they were quiet as a mouse after Oliver Neuville had scored for the 1-0 victory with the final whistle against a sacrificially fighting Polish team. In the past, Poland often had some very promising footballers but nevertheless the could never tie in with their golden seventies. After a 2-0 victory against Germany, they are on a good way in the actual qualifiers though, having many Bundesliga stars in their team such as Lukasz Pieszcek, Jakub Blaszcykowski or Robert Lewandowski. When I think of Poland, the legendary „Water battle of Frankfurt” directly comes to my mind.

My Polish jersey is a plein red one, but I really like the white rectangle on its chest representing the national flag of the Biało-Czerwoni” („white-red”). The futuristic badge of the FA and the heraldic bird are both very cool, too.

If there is anybody out there who could decipher the writings in the collar, it would be great to have mail from you... J
