COLOMBIA

(Federación Colombiana de Fútbol)

Radamel Falcao (AS Monaco)
Belgium vs. Colombia 0:2
Bruxelles (Belgium), 14.11.2013

I first got in contact with the Colombian football during 2014, as the national team could qualify again for a World Cup after a long dry spell and was somehow my insider tip with its good squad. Beside the German, the “Cafeteros” (named after the Colombian coffee planters) were the second team I supported in the World Cup – of course in a jersey!
The history of Colombian football is surely overshadowed by the happenings around the World Cup 1994 in the USA. Colombia has started as a favorite but dropped out very early after a disastrous 0-5 against Argentina. Sadly: defender Andrés Escobar who shot an own goal in that match later got shot down in a bar in Medellín. Colombia in general is presumed to be a country with very high criminality.
4 years earlier, the team wrote more positively history as the team around the two times Footballer of the Year of South America, Carlos Valderrama, made it to the quarter finals – the greatest success for a Colombian team of all times. 2014 they made it again, the actual squad has with James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao two absolute high-class strikers in it. Unforgotten also: the legendary “scorpion kick” by goalkeeper Rene Higuita – still a hit on YouTube!
I got my Colombia shirt as a Christmas present by my uncle Peter last year, thank you a lot! I really like the design and the contrast between fresh yellow and dark blue. The flock of “goal machine” Falcao printed on the back under the device “unidos por un país” (“united for one country”), that I often shouted into the night sky while being a little drunk. A great jersey from a great national team! The only downer: directly after I had gotten the shirt, Falcao ripped his cruciate ligament so that he wasn’t able to play in Brazil.
