TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

(Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation)

On the verge of the Venezuelan coast lies the exotic insular state of Trinidad and Tobago which consists as its name already says of the two islands Trinidad (“trinity”) and Tobago (named after its very special shape which looks like a “Tavaco”, the traditional tobacco pipe of the native people). The people there really love to celebrate Carnival a lot, the biggest cultural acquisitions from Trinidad and Tobago are not only the famous “limbo” and “calypso” dances, but also the musical instrument “steel pan”. The novel of “Robinson Crusoe” also takes place at the picturesque Caribbean beaches over there. You can find the Moruga “Scorpion” pepper from Trinidad and Tobago in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s hottest pepper.

Besides national sport Cricket, Trinidad Tobago recently generated some very promising athletics talents, especially sprinters. The football team definitely had its greatest moment ever as they surprisingly qualified for the WC 2006 in Germany. After a sensational 2-1 victory against Mexico, they beat the Asian representative from Bahrain in the play-offs and even achieved a very respectable 0-0 in their first match against the favored team from Sweden. Besides that, the team’s biggest victory was a third place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000. Until now, Trinidad and Tobago is the smallest country ever to qualify for a WC final round.

I got that Trinidad and Tobago shirt together with the Swedish one from Steffen Strauch via Facebook – thank you very much. It’s the away shirt the “Soca Warriors” used at their legendary WC participation in 2006 which became now, 9 years later, a little rare. It might be another unspectacular adidas design, but I really like the color combination of white, red and black.
