ICELAND

(Knattspyrnusamband Íslands)

Kolbeinn Sigthórsson (Ajax Amsterdam)
Iceland vs. the Netherlands 2:1

Iceland is mostly popular for its lots of inexpressible volcanoes regulary paralyzing the whole air traffic in Europe. Named after the Icelandic word for ice (“ís”), Iceland is the world’s biggest volcano island and also a favored tourist destination for its impressive landscape. Europe’s biggest glacier, Vatjajökull, is also in Iceland. Iceland has the most “Miss World” worldwide (1 in 100,000 inhabitants). Always worth visiting: the Icelandic phallus museum, where there are shown penis models of several animals. The bigger part of the Icelandic people stated in a poll that they’d believe in elves. The entries in Icelandic phone books are sorted after the first names, Icelandic capital Reykjavík also has the highest concentration of mobile phones in Europe.

Because of its small number of inhabitants, of course it is slightly difficult for Iceland to set up a team on a competitive basis in any team sports. Nevertheless, Iceland is very successful in its national sport handball. The Icelandic footballers, lead by the international top player Eiður Guðjohnsen, never made it to any international tournament, but failed surprisingly tight in the qualifiers for Brazil 2014 after the play-off matches against Croatia. In the running Euro qualifiers, they caused again some rumors, among other things by beating the Netherlands sovereignly 2-0. Very bitter for Iceland: they drawn into one group with Kazakhstan which means that they have to take the longest away trip which is possible in the UEFA zone.

The story behind my Iceland shirt probably is the most amazing so far on my blog. Just for fun, I wrote e-mails from my office to a few international FAs. When I was collecting club shirts, I already received some stickers and pins from the president of the Icelandic club IB Keflavík, but the KSI (Knattspyrnusamband Íslands) reaction to my mail was even more awesome. The FA’s media director, Ragnheiður Elíasdóttir, just sent me a package with my mail printed and without any further comment – absolutely priceless reaction! Now I owe the actual Iceland shirt from the Euro qualifiers – I almost fell off my chair. I am actually very overwhelmed by the helpfulness and the kindness of the Icelandic people, the shirt and the country will always have a very special place in my collection!

Þakka þér svo mikið, Ragnheiður!
