Very nice!

The United States of America – another country of superlative that colors another big piece of my world map of football shirts. Regarding its area and also its population, the USA are the third biggest country on earth. We owe the US not only a lot of cool movies and TV series, but also fast food in every imaginable shape and color. For other people, the USA are just a state with global power phantasies and a morbid persecution complex. Nevertheless, above everything floats the mystery of the “American Dream” – from dishwasher to millionaire. Besides that, the USA of course offer impressive landscapes and numerous million metropolis as well.

Football (which is mainly called “soccer” because the Americans use to call a strange and boring game with an egg-shaped ball their “football”) is only a minority sport in the USA behind basketball (NBA), baseball (MLB), ice hockey (NHL) and of course American football with its glorious NFL and the Super Bowl. The US-American footballers played their first international games around 1885 facing a Canadian selection, and participated in the first WC of all time where they even made it to the semi-finals. After a dry spell of almost 40 years, the USA are now a permanent guest at the WC since 1990. In 1994 they even hosted the tournament. They won the North- and Central-American-Championship five times. The most impressive player of the “US Boys” for me is goalkeeper Tim Howard who guards his goal on world class level for years and showed off some awesome skills in Brazil, too. The US are also a powerhouse in women’s football and the only team besides Norway that could win an Olympic Gold Medal, the WC and their continental championship.

I got my US shirt together with the Dutch one from Daniel Kreitz, another member of the cool Facebook group of football shirt collectors – thank you a lot, mate! The USA had some very cool designs in the past, but I especially liked that design of their Gold Cup winners’ shirt from 2013. Its design is in the style of the American flag, I really love the darker red sash that runs diagonally through the horizontal bars. Them guys use to wear it combined with dark blue shorts. Very nice!
