GIBRALTAR

(Gibraltar Football Association)

Gibraltar on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula is set under sovereignty from the United Kingdom since 1704. At the famous sea gate, the Strait of Gibraltar, is the closest point between Europe and Africa. Also popular: the breathtaking rock formations and the Gibraltarian Barbary apes. During its history there have been disagreements between the neighboring Spain and UK very often, especially regarding the dominance at the coast of Gibraltar. They somehow came to diplomatic solutions, but in fact there is still today some tension because of a few provocations from both sides. In a referendum the people from Gibraltar (a word such as “Gibraltarians” doesn’t make any sense because de facto they are British citizens) voted not only against the independence from the UK but also against the dual citizenship (Spanish and British). Funny: the only airstrip of the Gibraltar airport is crossed by a public street which is the only connection between land and peninsula. The solution is very pragmatic, they simply use barriers.

Regarding football, the country is somehow in a twilight zone. FIFA still refuses its membership, but since 2013 Gibraltar is official member of the UEFA and participates for the first time in the qualifiers for EURO 2016 where they have to face Germany. The most valuable footballer of Gibraltar is center-back Scott Wiseman who plays for Preston North End in the 3rd division of England.

Around 2012 Gibraltar played in very cool hummel shirts. By now, they wear some also very beautiful designed jerseys from the English outfitter Admiral. In between they had this very boring Nike template off the shelf which can only be graded up a little by the cool badge of Gibraltar with its castle and key and the slogan “Montis Insignia Calpe” (engl.: “Of the mountain called Calpe”). Sadly it is not the badge of the Gibraltar Football Association but from the country itself. Before their first official international match against Slovakia, the FA announced those Nike shirts as their official jerseys and even sold it in the stores. In the match they already used the new Admiral shirts, that's why the Nike shirt has never been worn in a match and there are only fan shop pictures of it.  I will definitely buy the Admiral shirt some day, but until then the Nike shirtis another important step towards the unreachable-seeming goal of 210 countries…
