GUATEMALA

(Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatamela)

Carlos Ruiz (Los Angeles Galaxy)
Guatemala vs. Costa Rica 3:1
Guatemala City (Guatemala), 12.10.2005

I did not know a lot about the country Guatemala in Central America and the Guatemalan (I had to look that word up in a dictionary) national team until now. The people in Guatemala and the players of the football team both are often called “Chapines”. “Chapines” originally means something like “slippers” but got a very affectionate meaning today. The country which has a very beautiful location is mostly known for the famous Maya temples in Tikal.
But back to football: since its foundation in 1921 “Los Chapines” try desperately to qualify for a World Cup. Their best result was a 4th place in CONCACAF Gold Cup 1996. Unfortunately nations as Mexiko, the USA or Costa Rica aren’t the worst competitors in the qualification round. In 2006, they nearly made it to the World Cup in Germany, they only missed two points behind Trinidad and Tobago.
One day I found the shirt in eBay for a very good price although it seems to be a little rare. It’s a shirt from those days in 2006. The design is kinda plain but I like it very much because I really love jerseys with sashs. I also like the emblem of the federation.

Of course, I keep my fingers crossed for them to meet one day at a FIFA World Cup!
