NIGERIA

(Nigeria Football Federation)

Nigeria is by far the most populous country of Africa. After its democratization after a military dictatorship for years, the country desperately tries to fight poverty with its richness of oil – because of massive corruption unluckily without too much success. Nigeria’s biggest city, Lagos, was known to be the most expensive city on earth until the 1980s and is today one of the most criminal cities of all. The cultural diversity of Nigeria – for example, there are 514 different languages spoken – is very impressive on one hand, but on the other hand it also causes a lot of violent disputes between different ethnos and religious groups. Nigeria’s famous movie industry “Nollywood” produces nearly 200 movies a week, the country also has the world’s biggest diversity of butterflies.

The Nigerian football team is one of the strongest on the African continent, but also one of the worst organized. Unforgettable for example the "Missing-Shorts-Disaster” of Burkina Faso 1994. Nigeria could win the AFCON three times, but this year they failed during the qualifiers as defending champions. As I currently live in Frankfurt, you cannot think of Nigerian football without thinking of Jay-Jay Okocha, inventor of the legendary Okocha Heaver and idol of Eintracht Frankfurt’s public for years. Besides him, there were always some good footballers such as Nwankwo Kanu, Obafemi Martins or record player Joseph Yobo who made their breakthrough in international football. The Nigerian team doesn’t count to the most favored teams of Africa, but also because of the tragic assassinations on public viewing events in Nigeria during WC 2014 the “Super Eagles” had my full sympathy during the tournament. Very impressive: the Nigerian FA’s youth work. Their Under 17 team for example is record world champion with 4 titles!

Their adidas shirt as worn during WC 2014 with its two fresh shades of green is simply awesome, which is why I definitely had to buy it for myself as a Christmas present – with the printing of their midfield director Jon Obi Mikel.
